Lucky Uwakwe, Chairman of Nigeria's Blockchain Industry Coordinating Committee (BICCoN), has emphasized the importance of using artificial intelligence (AI) to preserve African languages at risk of extinction.

Uwakwe pointed out that the number of people speaking these languages is decreasing due to various socio-economic factors. Uwakwe cited the example of languages in Nigeria's Plateau State, where insecurity has displaced communities and caused their languages to disperse and decline.

According to Uwakwe, the goal is to ensure that no language is lost or destroyed. He noted that technological advances such as AI and blockchain can play an important role in achieving this goal.

He noted that in Nigeria, Google offers translations for only 3-4 languages (Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and Pidgin) out of more than 100 languages. Other languages are nearly extinct because software developers lack the training models to support them in creating new applications.

By integrating blockchain and AI, communities can be encouraged to speak and document their local languages and earn tokens in the process. These datasets are used to train AI models to understand and support these languages.

His commitment to this issue has been further reinforced by his recent appointment as LingoAI community ambassador for Nigeria and Africa. As CEO of Sabi Group, Uwakwe introduced blockchain and Web3 solutions across the continent.

Nigeria's Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has launched its first multilingual major language model (LLM), as the country aims to take a leadership position in artificial intelligence (AI) development in Africa.
