OpenAI is the most funded artificial intelligence company this year.
Artificial intelligence (AI)-focused startup OpenAI’s valuation could soon soar to $86 billion as the company reportedly plans to conduct a tender offer that would allow its current employees to sell their shares, Bloomberg reported Oct. 19.
The tender offer allows employees and existing company shareholders to convert their shares into cash. Elon Musk-led company SpaceX made a similar takeover offer in June, valuing the company at around $150 billion.
For OpenAI, the move marks another milestone in its extraordinary rise. The company’s valuation has more than doubled in just two years, from $14 billion to $30 billion in 2021. If it successfully raises new funds, its valuation will exceed legendary financial companies such as Stripe, while still lagging behind Musk’s SpaceX and TikTok parent ByteDance.
It is reported that OpenAI has received the most funding of all artificial intelligence companies this year. The artificial intelligence company received a $10 billion investment from Microsoft earlier this year, and then received another $300 million investment from venture capital firms such as Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.
The massive infusion of funding is largely driven by the performance of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence-powered ChatGPT, which emerged as a standout innovation last year. ChatGPT generates responses based on written prompts, demonstrating sophistication and creativity far beyond that of traditional chatbots.
This success paved the way for competing products such as Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Bard. Nevertheless, OpenAI’s ChatGPT still maintains its dominance as an industry leader as it is actively developing new products and introducing features to stay ahead.
Beyond that, the company is expected to reach $1 billion in annual revenue as more businesses adopt its technology.
