Meme Coins’ Stronghold Is Being Shook: Telegram Takes a Shocking Step Back in Privacy!

Telegram has made significant changes to its policy on sharing user data with governments following the arrest of its CEO Pavel Durov in France.

Telegram will provide more user data to governments following the arrest of its CEO Pavel Durov in France last month. Messaging app Telegram announced significant changes to its terms of service. Pavel Durov announced these changes in a post on Telegram on Monday.

According to Telegram’s new privacy terms, users’ IP addresses and phone numbers will be shared with judicial authorities in criminal investigations. After Bloomberg reported these changes, Telegram-related Toncoin (TON) lost about 1% in value and is currently trading at $5.62.

Although Telegram-based meme coins and TON did not experience a major decline at the beginning, the loss of trust in Telegram could also dampen volumes and interest in the long term.

The changes come after Durov was arrested in France last month. Authorities alleged that Telegram allowed its users to use the app for illegal activities such as drug dealing, distribution of child abuse material and fraud.

Telegram’s War on Scammers

Following his arrest, Russian-born Durov vowed to make changes to the app, stressing that “getting the right balance between privacy and security is not easy.” Earlier this month, Telegram stopped users from uploading new media in an effort to prevent bots and scammers.

The changes, made on Monday, are seen as a significant departure from the app’s previous privacy policy.
