Cardano founder reveals plans to launch Doom

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson revealed on his X account that the classic 1990s first-person shooter game "Doom" will be launched on Cardano's Hydra expansion solution. Hoskinson hinted that backers will have a chance to play the game at the upcoming Rare Evo blockchain conference in Las Vegas from August 15th to 17th. Hoskinson will be one of the invited speakers at this conference.

From the game link shared by Hoskinson this time, it can be seen that the link seems to be an expanded version of the official Hydra.family platform. As of press time, the game is not yet open for play, and the official link says "coming soon." In addition, Trym Måke Bruset, blockchain consultant and product manager at Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), also used a suggestive GIF on X to remind that the game is about to be launched, and shared a link to the official Hydra Doom platform.

Doom runs on Cardano Hydra

It's worth noting that these news come just three months after Hoskinson first confirmed plans to bring Doom to the Hydra platform. At that time, Hoskinson posted a 37-second clip of the Doom gameplay on the X and briefly stated that "Hydra is coming soon." Published by American game development company id Software in 1993, this classic first-person shooter tells the story of a space marine (Doomguy) fighting against the forces of darkness.

Known for its 3D graphics and fast action, Doom was one of the main influences that popularized the first-person shooter (FPS) genre and multiplayer deathmatch. Its success spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, and a dedicated modding community.

In an earlier reveal, Hoskinson emphasized that in order for Doom to run on Cardano, the game would exist as a smart contract on Hydra heads. Last month, IOHK also confirmed that backers could play Hydra Doom online or offline during the Rare Evo conference. Hoskinson has always been passionate about games, with early role-playing games (RPGs) being one of his personal favorites. In May 2020, Hoskinson revealed his intention to acquire and revitalize the 1992 RPG Legends of Valor.

Cardano’s strategic intentions in the gaming market

Cardano’s entry into the gaming market and its choice of “Doom” as the first game on its platform shows its confidence in the potential of blockchain technology in gaming applications. This move not only attracts game enthusiasts, but also demonstrates the technical capabilities and diverse application scenarios of the Cardano platform.

By running Doom on the Hydra platform, Cardano aims to demonstrate the performance and flexibility of its extended functionality solution. Hydra is Cardano’s layer 2 scaling solution designed to significantly increase the network’s scalable functionality and transaction speed. This cooperation with "Doom" is undoubtedly a technical verification, and it is also a marketing promotion.

Overall, Cardano's move into the gaming market will help expand its capabilities in blockchain technology applications and attract more users and developers to join its ecosystem. With the upcoming launch of "Doom" on the Hydra platform, Cardano will usher in a new wave of attention and further consolidate its position in the blockchain industry.
