German car company Mercedes-Benz is the latest business to take its first steps into the Metaverse. On December 14, the company filed five trademark applications related to the Metaverse and NFTs.
Mercedes-Benz trademark application
The company has applied for five trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO): Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes, S-Class, G-Class and Maybach. According to registered trademark agent Mike Kondoudis, Mercedes intends to develop a range of goods and services using cryptocurrency and NFTS.
In a tweet, Kondoudis said Mercedes aims to develop NFTs, virtual clothing and merchandise, virtual car parts and financial services. It will also enable cryptocurrency transactions.
Additionally, one trademark specifically outlines plans to create "crypto collectibles" for its luxury Maybach models. This includes digital or physical elements such as animal fur, blankets, carpets, mats and cushions. Another filing states that NFT-backed collectibles will also be created for the company's S-Class models. It may contain audio recordings, video recordings, image files, music and multimedia files containing artwork, text, audio, images or video.
Mercedes and Web3
It’s worth noting that this isn’t Mercedes’ first foray into Web3. Last January, the company launched an NFT series in which five renowned international artists created digital artworks commemorating the Mercedes G-Class. The series also granted holders the possibility of winning a physical G-Class if sales of the series reached $1 million.
Additionally, despite the crypto winter, globally recognized brands continue to enter Web3. Mercedes is one of many automotive companies that have joined this growing space in the past six months. The company appears committed to the long term, although the scope of use of these trademarks remains unknown. We will have to wait and see how the Mercedes team plans to incorporate these trademarks into their business.
