The missing case of "The first person in the cryptocurrency circle"
Who is BBQCat?
Do you know who FriedCat is? People outside the Bitcoin circle may not know FriedCat, but within the circle, he is very famous and is known as the "No. 1 in the Bitcoin Circle."
In 2012, when Bitcoin was still little known in China, he had already opened up new territory in the field of virtual currency.
In 2013, he rode a roller coaster ride with conviction and strength, bringing himself and many others great wealth and screams of passion.
But at the end of 2014, he disappeared mysteriously without leaving a single word. His disappearance was full of doubts, and was called "one of the top ten unsolved mysteries in the cryptocurrency circle" by people in the circle. The disappearance of FriedCat has sparked a lot of discussion in the cryptocurrency circle. Everyone is asking, where did FriedCat go? Many people tried to find him, but in the end, to no avail.
People are looking for FriedCat not only for money, but more out of regret. If FriedCat were still alive, he would have done more groundbreaking things and continued to lead people in the cryptocurrency circle to experience unimaginable possibilities. There are many reports and rumors about FriedCat’s disappearance on the Internet, but there is very little information that can be confirmed. I will introduce FriedCat’s life, his adventure with Bitcoin, sort out the information about his disappearance, and talk about my views, hoping to provide some ideas.
The life of roasted cat
Kaomao, whose real name is Jiang Xinyu, was born in Shaoyang, Hunan in 1986.
In 2001, Jiang Xinyu, who graduated from Shaoyang No. 1 Middle School, was admitted to the Junior Class of the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei with the 11th place in the country (another saying is 11th place in Hunan). He was 15 years old that year.
Whether ranked 11th in the country or the province, Jiang Xinyu's name is still hanging high on the honor roll of his alma mater, admired by his junior and senior classmates at the No. 1 Middle School.
In 2009, 23-year-old Jiang Xinyu obtained a master’s degree in computer science after writing a thesis (Using formal methods to build a secure thread mechanism), and entered the doctoral program in computer science at the University of Science and Technology of China-Yale Center for High Trustworthy Software Research.
In 2011, he went to Yale University for a visiting scholar program. It was also in the summer of that year that 烤猫 encountered Bitcoin and began to study it. Soon, he took a leave of absence. Later, some people said that Jiang Xinyu was fascinated by Bitcoin and neglected his studies. Others said that Bitcoin provided an outlet for this depressed teenager whose studies were not going well. Jiang Xinyu, who interrupted his academic pursuits, gradually turned his attention to practical work. On January 16, 2012, Jiang Xinyu registered an ID on the official Bitcoin forum. "烤猫" was born.
FriedCat registered on the forum.
In the first half of 2012, Kaomao, Fan Dawei and others returned to Hefei and then went to Shenzhen to start a business. Fan Dawei played an important role in his life.
Jiang Xinyu's life is full of ups and downs, and he has been given many labels.
He is a gifted young man who has passed the world's academic halls with excellent grades; he is a geek who promotes the birth of a new business model with cutting-edge technology; he also has humanistic ideals and yearns for liberalism. The issuance and circulation of Bitcoin does not need to rely on the government and third-party institutions, and people can trade freely.
FriedCat wants to use Bitcoin to build a distributed and decentralized world. At the same time, he keeps a low profile and rarely appears in public. When he does, he shows the image of an unkempt engineering guy: loose T-shirt, casual shorts, black slippers, thin body, unkempt hair, a little hunchback, small eyes and square metal-framed myopic glasses.
Peaks and valleys: a bitcoin adventure
In July 2012, FriedCat posted a fundraising post on the forum, claiming that it had the ability to develop ASIC mining chips and manufacture mining machines for mining, and needed 1 million RMB. In the post (ASICMINER: To create the future of ASIC mining), FriedCat introduced the project in detail and responded to questions. FriedCat initiated crowdfunding on the forum, and that month its partner Fan Dawei registered Bitquan Information Technology Co., Ltd. in Shenzhen. Subsequently, FriedCat successfully raised funds, and the stock was named ASICMiner, and the mining machine was also named after it. The company's shares were divided into 400,000 shares, and FriedCat sold 41% and held 59%.
The success of the BBK crowdfunding stems from the trust of people in the industry and its activeness. Its technical strength is one of the keys to its rise, and the ASICMiner project has attracted much attention. At that time, domestic investors such as Wu Jihan and "Crazy Xiaoqiang" had full confidence in the ability of the BBK team, representing the voice of many investors. Later, it was proved that Wu Jihan and others had the right vision.
In early 2013, Wang Song and Zhuang Zhong joined the team, and the four of them stayed in Shenzhen Maple Leaf Garden Apartment for half a year. Zhuang Zhong wrote code, Wang Song was in charge of procurement, supply chain and mining factory, Baked Cat was responsible for external investor relations, and Fan Dawei was in charge of product design. During this period, Baked Cat developed the first Bitcoin mining machine and became the world's second largest mining machine manufacturer. Bitquan's market strategy had an absolute advantage, allowing the Baked Cat team to surpass Butterfly Labs and Canaan Creative in mining machine manufacturing.
In fact, as early as June 2012, Butterfly Labs announced that it would produce the first mining machine in September. In January 2013, Canaan Creative founder Pumpkin Zhang developed the first commercial ASIC mining machine in the cryptocurrency circle. The Roast Cat team followed closely and successfully developed ASIC chips and mining machine core technologies almost at the same time. The emergence of ASIC mining machines brought mining into a new era and greatly improved the speed. How can Roast Cat win the first place in the midst of the opponent's front and back attacks? Here is some knowledge about Bitcoin.
As we all know, banks in various countries record currency transactions. How are transactions of Bitcoin, a virtual currency that circulates globally, recorded? There is a group of people who record Bitcoin transactions around the world on the Internet, using a specific calculation method. They are called miners, and recording transactions is mining. When a certain number of transactions is reached, that is, a "block" is mined, the miners will receive Bitcoin as a reward, and sometimes also from transaction fees. Mining is the only way to get Bitcoin besides buying it.
Anyone can mine, and any computer can mine, but the computing power varies, and the mining speed varies. It may take years to mine even one coin. ASIC technology can increase mining capacity and reduce costs. At that time, Butterfly Labs, Canaan Creative, and BitQuen were competing to see who could make a high-capacity ASIC mining machine first. Although Pumpkin Zhang's results were first released, he pre-sold mining machines and chips, allowing coin friends to mine on their own. After the Roast Cat team developed the chip, they immediately put the mining machine into mass production and large-scale mining.
When Pumpkin Zhang shipped the products to the subscribers, BBQCat's mining machines had already started mining in an old factory in Shenzhen.
That is to say, while Pumpkin Zhang’s customers were still waiting for the mining machines, BBQ’s investors were already collecting their money at home. Meanwhile, Bitquan’s mines were constantly mining bitcoins.
On February 18, 2013, the FriedCat mining machine mined a block for the first time and obtained 50 bitcoins. In April, Pumpkin Zhang announced that it would no longer produce mining machines, but only chips, while Butterfly Labs was unable to produce mining machines.
Soon, BBQ became the dominant player in the global ASIC mining machine market.
The rise and fall of BBQCat
Butterfly Labs was forced to close by the US Federal Trade Commission in September 2014. Bitquan’s price soared in 2013, with its share price rising 50 times in July. BBQ achieved amazing growth, and its stock was regarded as the most worthy investment. Li Xiaolai endorsed it many times.
Baked Cat has no rivals in the ASIC mining machine market, and its mining farm accounts for 30% of the total network computing power. However, it encountered difficulties in developing the second-generation chip, and the market competition was fierce.
In October 2013, the mining machine computing power dropped from 42% to 4%. In 2014, the third-generation chip launched by FC had problems and the new product was unsalable. Then the Tube mining machine was launched, but the profit was not high, and the business fell into trouble. Subsequently, FC signed a contract with Fujian businessman Lin QX to build a mining farm, but due to conflicts of interest, they could not cooperate and had to pay 80 million yuan in liquidated damages. In October 2014, FC got married and suddenly lost contact at the end of the year.
After FriedCat lost contact, various speculations emerged online. Some said he went to Sweden to look for a mine, some said he had depression or lived in seclusion in the mountains, and some said he met with an accident.
In March 2015, 19,000 Bitcoins were transferred out of FBMiao’s three Bitcoin wallet accounts.
The story of BBQCat is full of twists and turns and remains a mystery to this day.
This is not the end.
Two and a half years later, a netizen named Bitcoin Black posted a post saying that on July 29 and August 4, 2017, there were five transfer records in the two wallet accounts of FriedCat, with a total of 17,597 bitcoins transferred out, which was equivalent to RMB 323 million at the price of the currency at that time. According to reports, this number was about the daily trading volume of domestic bitcoin exchanges at that time.
Were these two transfers done by FriedCat himself?
Xie Jian, a shareholder of the company, issued a statement saying that only FriedCat knew the account. So, the two transfers from the account indicated that the operator was either FriedCat himself or someone who controlled FriedCat's activities and forced him to hand over his account and password.
The last piece of news related to Friedcat appeared on December 15, 2018. Former COO Bo He posted a message on WeChat Moments, saying without any context: "Friedcat has finally returned to the team."
But in the end, FriedCat did not show up, and some people suspected that she was hyping it up. The signs of FriedCat "appearing" after the four disappearances made the entire disappearance incident even more suspicious.
Regarding the documentary (If America Doesn’t Exist) released on FC’s social account, its production perspective runs counter to FC’s beliefs.
Netizen “Junecat” commented that this film is an “American patriotic mainstream film” that whitewashes historical acts such as genocide, land grabbing, imperialism, and capitalism.
FriedCat is a staunch anarchist. Although he was a visiting scholar at Yale, he and many other Americans and foreigners disagree with many actions of the US government. Did FriedCat share this video? Why would he share and spread a viewpoint he disagrees with? There are several possibilities.
First, FriedCat voluntarily shared this video. He changed his mind and no longer believed in the dream of liberalism and the original intention of changing the world through Bitcoin. This explains his disappearance and why he shared this documentary.
Second, the person who forwarded the message is not FriedCat, but he/she hopes that everyone will think that FriedCat is alive and well. The person who forwarded the message does not understand FriedCat’s point of view.
If it is the second case, FriedCat may be fine, or he may have been killed. Where did FriedCat go?
Some people in the cryptocurrency circles at home and abroad believe that FC has deceived investors and absconded with the coins.
Many people who know FC, even those who have only met him once and are not close friends, do not think that FC would do this, and even repeatedly emphasize that "he will definitely not run away."
The motive for the scam is simply money, but this does not seem to be the case with FC.
A former employee of BitQuen said that FriedCat was not excited about the ups and downs of the currency value, and he was fascinated by the world of Bitcoin. He joined the cryptocurrency circle for the fun of doing it itself, combined with his computer science major. FriedCat's image is unkempt, even when attending company events, and his material desires seem to be weak.
After FriedCat disappeared, his family did not seem to benefit from it. He did not spend money on himself, nor did he give it to his family, so it is unlikely that he could have taken away so much money.
Murder theory
FC disappeared while he was working hard to solve the company crisis. There were rumors that he disappeared while solving the problem in Huai'an.
Lin, who claimed to be a shareholder of Shuanghui Group, showed off his pilot's license during the first meeting and said he could help FriedCat build a mining factory in Huai'an. After signing the agreement, the mining farm could not operate as planned due to chip problems, and the partner hijacked the computing power. The company sent people to coordinate but failed, so FriedCat had to go there in person.
The mine robbery may be related to the disappearance of FriedCat. In Huai'an, there are more than a dozen chambers of commerce. It is said that the year FriedCat disappeared, the police investigated a mafia gang.
When the media went to the Huai'an mine to look for clues, Huai'an had denied any connection with Bitcoin. In March 2015, Zhao Dong said that Huai'an said that Friedcat was fine, but the time did not seem to match. According to the shareholder statement, the computing power was hijacked on December 25, 2014, which coincided with the disappearance of Friedcat. Moreover, Huai'an concealed its cooperation with Friedcat.
Nearly three years after the incident, media investigations have been met with setbacks. The factory security guard refused to comment on the Bitcoin issue, and the company's official website was vague about the details and simply hung up without responding.
If FriedCat didn't commit suicide, and we know very little about his disappearance, are there really no other clues? Who is most likely to know?
Some clues and speculations about FriedCat
FriedCat’s ex-wife Wang Xian may be the person who knows best about his activities before he disappeared. They got married in October 2014, and FriedCat may have bought a house and moved into it before that.
FriedCat disappeared in January 2015, and Wang Xian was divorced in October of the same year. Why did they divorce so quickly? It could be because they were too emotional, or they could be raising their own children.
The Bitcoin account of FriedCat shows that his Bitcoins are still intact. This makes it less likely that FriedCat is a scam and also makes us more certain about some situations.
Someone coveted FriedCat's Bitcoin, and the possibility of murder cannot be ruled out. Someone familiar to FriedCat may have sacrificed him for Bitcoin. Fan Dawei and Jiang Xinyu were close friends, and they accompanied and inspired each other. After FriedCat disappeared, Fan Dawei announced the news on the forum, and later went on a study tour and refused to talk about FriedCat again.
FriedCat and Fan Dawei changed each other. They are close friends who support each other through thick and thin. I hope Jiang Xinyu is safe and I hope the world will give back the dreaming Jiang Xinyu that Fan Dawei loved.
