The Public Investigation Office has started to arrest President Yoon

The Senior Public Officials Crime Investigation Office (Public Investigation Office), which is investigating the 12.3 illegal smoking cessation incident, is expected to execute an arrest warrant on the morning of the 3rd for President Yoon Seok-yeol, the suspected chief culprit of the rebellion. This is the first attempt to arrest a sitting president in constitutional history. The PIA is currently making final preparations, such as exploring the route to the presidential residence.

According to the legal community on the 2nd, the PIA and the National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters are discussing the execution plan of the arrest warrant, including the specific action route of the arrest team, in order to smoothly execute the arrest warrant. The PIA originally planned to execute the arrest warrant on the 2nd, but decided to postpone it by one day in order to work more closely with the police. It is reported that although the arrest warrant can also be executed at night or in the early morning, considering Yoon's presidential status, the PIA prefers to execute the arrest warrant during working hours.

The PIA plans to deploy about 50 prosecutors and investigators, almost all of its manpower. The police will also dispatch about 10 mobile teams to deal with possible conflicts between the Presidential Guard and protesters.

The PDI is also fully prepared for the investigation after the arrest. Lee Dae-hwan and Cha Jung-hyun were appointed as the chief prosecutors in charge of directly investigating President Yoon. It is reported that the PDI prepared a list of more than 100 pages of questions based on its own investigation materials and the main investigation records obtained from the prosecution and the police.

President Yoon's side strongly opposed this, saying that "the execution of the arrest warrant is an active crime of abuse of power and obstruction of public duties." Yoon's lawyer Yoon Gap-geun said in a statement, "If the Police Mobile Unit assists the prosecutors of the PDI in executing the arrest warrant, they will need to have the investigation command power over the police similar to the prosecution in the past. If the Police Mobile Unit executes the arrest and search warrant instead of the PDI, the Presidential Guard and any citizen can arrest him as an active criminal suspect."
