Serious statement: No AI replication of my image is allowed.

Hollywood superstar Robert Downey Jr. recently made strong statements on the podcast (On With Kara Swisher), clearly stating that he does not wish for Hollywood to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create his digital replica. He warned, 'I intend to sue all future executives who approve the creation of my digital replica.' Downey does not want his image to be used on screen through AI technology or deep fakes.

In the program, the host mentioned his role as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Downey stated that he is not worried about the current Marvel team because they respect his character and image. He said, 'Going back to the MCU, I’m not worried about them hijacking the soul of my character because the decision-makers there wouldn’t do that, whether I’m there or not.' However, he expressed concern about future executives who might take over and emphasized that he would take legal action to protect his rights.

Criticizing AI industry giants, questioning moral responsibility.

In addition to his film work, Downey is currently involved in a Broadway play (McNeal), which explores the corporate giants in the AI industry, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. During an interview with host Kara Swisher, Downey criticized these tech leaders.

He stated, 'I don't envy those who are overly exposed in this new phase of information age. They think that because they have a huge startup, everything belongs to them, which is wrong.'

Downey further pointed out, 'The problem is, when these people see themselves as the arbiters of managing everything, while also wanting to be viewed in a favorable light, it’s a huge mistake. It makes me feel repulsed and unwilling to engage with them because they are not sincere.' He emphasized that the development of technology should be accompanied by moral responsibility, not just the pursuit of personal gain.

Upholding character autonomy, no digital replacements allowed.

Regarding the possibility of being replicated by AI technology in the future, Downey stated his position. He wants to maintain control over his image and character, not allowing others to digitally recreate him without authorization. When the host mentioned that future executives may not respect his wishes as much as they do now,

Downey responded, 'You’re right. I hereby declare that I intend to sue all future executives, even if they are just in the planning stages.'

Although Downey is cautious about the use of AI in films, he has also invested in AI companies. He explained that, for him, it is more important that the people involved have a moral compass. He said, 'Ultimately, it’s not just about technology or an opportunity to make money, but rather, 'Who are the people involved? Do I think they have a moral compass?' His comments reflect his emphasis on the rights to his own image and a cautious attitude towards the application of AI technology in the entertainment industry.

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel surprised everyone by announcing that Downey will return to the MCU, joining the Avengers series' fifth film (Avengers: Doomsday) as the villain 'Doctor Doom', a character that will replace 'Kang the Conqueror' as the biggest villain of Phase Six of the MCU, rather than appearing as Iron Man from a parallel universe.
