Blockchain data from Decrypt shows that on Monday (3/12), a wallet labeled "U.S. Government: Silk Road Seized Fund Department of Justice" transferred 19,800 Bitcoin, valued at approximately 1.92 billion USD, to the world’s third-largest cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.
This is believed to be the amount of Bitcoin seized by the U.S. Government from the Silk Road "black market." This amount of Bitcoin was split into two to be transferred to two different wallets on Coinbase. According to Arkham, the cost to transfer 19,800 Bitcoin was only 3.34 USD.
The moved Bitcoin has been confirmed as part of the 50,000 BTC that U.S. authorities seized from investigations related to the Silk Road hack. This was one of the largest online "black markets" in the world and was shut down in 2014.
Following this news, the price of Bitcoin dropped more than 2% to 95,250 USD/BTC, according to CoinGecko. However, the value of this cryptocurrency has now recovered nearly 1% to 96,461 USD!!!
