MetaMask is the most popular wallet for Ethereum and other blockchains that are compatible with Ethereum. In 2022, MetaMask reached 30 million users, which is a truly impressive feat in the context of the crypto industry.

Despite being massively successful, the MetaMask project does not have its own token, unlike most other major players in cryptocurrency and blockchain. However, it’s likely that we will see a MetaMask token at some point in the future based on comments from people that are closely connected to the project.

Let’s explore what we know about MetaMask’s plans to launch a token and the chances that we’ll see a MetaMask airdrop in the future.

Will MetaMask launch a token?

We already saw some comments regarding a potential MetaMask token in 2021, when MetaMask developer Eric Marks said during a developer call that MetaMask didn’t have any immediate plans to launch a token at the time. 

Marks did say that MetaMask was open to the idea of launching a token, but added that it would need a compelling use-case and be beneficial to the MetaMask community. Notably, Marks said that MetaMask was not interested in doing an “ICO airdrop”:

So obviously, if we just did an ICO airdrop, it probably would benefit the community, or some of the community, because it would immediately pump, and some people would sell it, and then it would dump. That’s not really what we want to do.

MetaMask operates under the umbrella of ConsenSys, which is a major player in the Ethereum development ecosystem. In March of 2022, ConsenSys CEO Joe Lubin told crypto news outlet Decrypt that MetaMask was planning to launch a token and a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization). Interestingly enough, the DAO discussed by Lubin wouldn’t govern MetaMask, but would instead “enable the creation of novel new pieces of MetaMask to be funded”.

Don’t expect a MetaMask airdrop to happen

Jacobc.eth, who was MetaMask’s lead of operations at the time, said in 2022 that MetaMask will be careful to ensure that their token will not be a “cash grab”. He specifically mentioned that MetaMask wasn’t interested in giving governance power to “airdrop farmers”.

“Airdrop farming” is the practice of using decentralized applications and protocols that are rumored to be planning a token launch. In many cases, users create multiple wallets in order to maximize their potential rewards. 

There have been many examples of crypto projects distributing token airdrops to existing users, and airdrop farmers are trying to take advantage of this. Of course, projects conducting airdrops want to distribute their tokens to organic users, but the issue of airdrop farming is difficult to address due to the unique nature of public blockchains, where users interact with addresses that are not tied to any real-world identities.

So, we’ve already seen two people from the MetaMask project mention airdrops in a mostly negative context. Based on this, we can say that MetaMask probably won’t pursue an airdrop like we’ve seen from other crypto projects. At this time, it’s unclear what kind of token distribution model MetaMask plans to use if they will eventually launch a token.

How to prepare for a potential MetaMask airdrop?

Even though it seems unlikely that MetaMask will use an airdrop to distribute their token, there’s a few things you can do that would increase your chances of receiving tokens if a MetaMask airdrop does happen in the future. Here’s a few ideas of what you could do to increase your chances:

Create a MetaMask wallet and transfer some ETH to it

Use your MetaMask wallet to interact with decentralized applications

Use MetaMask’s integrated token swapping feature

Use MetaMask’s bridging service to transfer tokens between different blockchains

Please keep in mind that most of the steps outlined above require you to pay gas fees. So, if you think the chances of a MetaMask airdrop are very low, it might not be worth it to complete these tasks.

Beware of MetaMask airdrop scams

Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams floating around that are already promoting a MetaMask airdrop or token sale. These scams are designed to steal users’ crypto and/or personal information through malicious smart contracts, phishing or malware. The MetaMask project has not (yet) announced any concrete plans to launch a token.

If you’re seeing anyone promoting a MetaMask airdrop or MetaMask coin at this time, you should be extremely careful. We recommend that you check MetaMask’s official online channels such as their website and official Twitter account if you’re looking for information. If MetaMask does decide to launch a token, they will announce it on their official channels.

The MetaMask team is well aware of various scams impersonating MetaMask, and have warned users against them.

The bottom line — The chances for a MetaMask airdrop are low

Based on what we know so far, it seems very likely that MetaMask will launch a token at some point in the future. We have already seen some cryptocurrency wallet projects launch tokens. Examples include the Trust Wallet Token and the XDEFI token.

However, comments from people closely associated with MetaMask seem to indicate that the project is not interested in doing an airdrop similar to what we’ve seen with the Uniswap airdrop or the Arbitrum airdrop, so trying to farm a MetaMask crypto airdrop might be a waste of time.

If you’re interested in a potential MetaMask airdrop, you’re likely already a user of the MetaMask wallet and you might be eligible in case MetaMask does decide to pursue an airdrop. However, the chances for a MetaMask airdrop seem quite low at the moment.
