According to TechCrunch, the messaging software Telegram, which has nearly 1 billion users worldwide, launched its first update of the year today, adding a third-party account verification method, new message search filters, and the ability to convert gifts into NFTs.

Third party agency verification

According to reports, Telegram, which has previously provided account verification services for use by public figures and organizations, has now launched a new feature that allows verified third-party organizations (such as food quality regulators or education alliances) to verify accounts. Additionally, accounts verified by a third party will display a new logo next to their name instead of a blue checkmark.

Telegram said in a blog post:

"This decentralized additional verification platform will help prevent fraud and reduce misinformation, providing a unique and forward-looking solution that sets new security standards for social platforms."

Individuals or organizations wishing to obtain identity verification need to be verified and complete an application before they can receive the verification mark. Telegram said entities can use its Bot API to assign or remove verification eligibility, similar to the mechanism on the X platform where organizations purchase verification and verify affiliate accounts. Verified affiliate accounts will display the organization's logo.

Gift Conversion NFT

Additionally, Telegram has launched a feature that converts virtual gifts into collectible NFTs with customizable backgrounds and icons. Users can send gifts by purchasing Telegram Stars, which can be purchased within the app or by connecting a TON cryptocurrency wallet to the Fragment website.

Telegram said users will be able to trade these NFTs on different platforms. Notably, Telegram charges users to upgrade gifts into NFT collectibles to cover blockchain transaction costs.

Emoji responses, advanced filters

Telegram has been using cryptocurrencies to monetize creators and to pay for games and mini-apps on the platform.

Additionally, the company is introducing emoji responses to service messages (such as when someone joins a group), as well as new search filters for private chats, group chats, and channels to find what you're looking for more efficiently.
