USA threatened by budget paralysis on the eve of Christmas
Washington (AFP) – American congressmen are making last-minute efforts to avoid a budget paralysis that is set to take effect this Friday, after Donald Trump and Elon Musk sabotaged a bipartisan agreement that would have kept the government running beyond Christmas.
Funding for government activities will run out at midnight on Friday, and the Republican-led House of Representatives needs to find a short-term solution to replace a funding package that seemed like a done deal before Trump's intervention.
If an agreement is not reached beforehand, federal agencies, national parks, and various other services will begin to shut down on Saturday while the government will have to send 875,000 workers home on unpaid leave.
