Wall Street was trading in a subdued manner on Monday ahead of the release of the much-anticipated US monthly consumer inflation figures. Chinese inflation data showed a slowdown in consumer spending, while the European Central Bank holds its latest policy-setting meeting this week.

1. Will US CPI confirm a December rate cut?

The US Federal Reserve is widely expected to cut interest rates next week, as November’s nonfarm payrolls report showed weakness in the labor market, even as job growth rebounded from October’s figures that were depressed by strikes and hurricanes.

Financial markets currently see a more than 80% chance of a 25 basis point rate cut at the US central bank’s policy meeting on December 17-18.
