Ethereum was created on July 30, 2015.
It was launched after a crowdfunding campaign that began in 2014 led by Vitalik Buterin and a number of other founders. Ethereum is distinguished by being more than just a digital currency (Ether), as it provides a platform that enables the running of decentralized applications (DApps) and smart contracts using blockchain technology.
