Polkadot 2.0: Groundbreaking Update Introduces Elastic Scaling and 64-Bit PVM
During a recent Polkadot Fellowship meeting, Dr. Gavin Wood, the visionary behind Polkadot and Kusama, unveiled key advancements in the Join-Accumulate Machine (JAM). The latest version of the JAM gray paper, now at version 0.4, introduces "Ordered Accumulation," marking the final milestone before the release of the full 1.0 version.
JAM to Replace Polkadotâs Relay Chain
According to Polkadotâs official communication, JAM represents a ârevolutionary design set to replace the current relay chain.â Developed from the CoreJAM conceptâshort for Collect Refine Join AccumulateâJAM was crafted by Dr. Wood to introduce a new decentralized computational system. Its aim is to address key challenges like "sharding islands" by utilizing a decentralized data lake, enabling seamless modification and reuse of data across multiple work packages. This innovative model is expected to surpass the performance of current systems such as the Polkadot relay chain and Ethereum.
The Ordered Accumulation feature will ensure the sequential execution of work packages, allowing one package to build upon the output of another, ultimately delivering highly efficient and reliable computations.
Polkadot Virtual Machine (PVM) Enhanced with 64-Bit Upgrade
In another major announcement, Polkadot revealed plans to upgrade its Virtual Machine (PVM) from a 32-bit to a 64-bit system. This transition is expected to significantly boost performance and enhance data processing capabilities, preparing Polkadot for more complex operations as the network scales.
Elastic Scaling Expected in Early 2025
Fellowship member Andrei Sandu also provided a key update regarding Polkadotâs roadmap. He confirmed that elastic scaling is scheduled to roll out in January or February of 2025. This feature represents the final phase before the highly anticipated launch of Polkadot 2.0, which is expected within the same time window. Elastic scaling will enable Polkadot to dynamically adjust its capacity, preparing the network for increased demand and larger-scale decentralized applications.
With these upgrades, Polkadot 2.0 is positioned to set new standards in decentralized computing, offering advanced scalability, enhanced performance, and groundbreaking new features for its ecosyst
