Wormhole recently received a grant from the Worldcoin Foundation to integrate World ID, a leading decentralized identity protocol, onto the Solana blockchain. This move will allow protocols built on Solana to seamlessly verify World IDs originally authenticated on Ethereum, demonstrating the versatility of Wormholeâs multi-chain infrastructure and opening up new possibilities for cross-chain identity authentication.
World ID is at the heart of Worldcoin, which uses biometric data to ensure secure and fair authentication while employing privacy-preserving cryptographic techniques such as zero-knowledge proofs to verify identity without compromising user privacy. With Wormholeâs integration, protocols on Solana will be able to read, authenticate, and propagate World ID state roots from Ethereum, allowing them to authenticate a userâs World ID against the canonical state root stored on Ethereum.
In terms of technical integration, a new smart contract SolanaWorldIDProgram will be developed on Solana, which is responsible for verifying and storing the World ID state root and verifying the inclusion proof. Before Solana's bn254 system call is available, Wormhole queries will be used to verify the inclusion proof. The Ethereum to Solana Wormhole state bridge service will be responsible for propagating the World ID state root from Ethereum to Solana.
