Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin proposed creating a set of metrics to measure how “aligned” they are with Ethereum’s values. In a blog post on September 28, he noted that achieving “Ethereum compliance” is one of the most important social challenges in the Ethereum ecosystem. However, he acknowledged that various customer teams, application developers, researchers, and local communities are all trying to contribute to Ethereum in their own unique ways.

Buterin said that projects have starting points such as open source and interoperability. This allows code to be reviewed for security purposes and allows third parties to make improvements. Additionally, decentralization and security can be measured through “walkaway” and “insider attack” tests. It can also be assessed how positively a project contributes to the Ethereum community or humanity.

Buterin emphasized the importance of Ethereum remaining neutral. Ethereum community member Ryan Berckmans noted the importance of Ethereum developers limiting marketing. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson suggested that Ethereum may be too reliant on Buterin.
