US exchange Coinbase’s own L2 Base announced on Twitter that it is launching sub-names based on the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) infrastructure, called Basenames, which will be sold to users through a Dutch auction on Tuesday.

Base introduces Basenames domain name service

As the core tool for establishing identities on the Base chain, the team announced that it will use ENS technology to launch sub-usernames called "Basenames":

Claim a unique base.eth username to make it easier for you to connect, collaborate, and contribute on-chain.

It is reported that the sub-username of the Base is created under the existing ENS username (parent username), which is ".eth", and is used to manage multiple ENS identities, similar to the sub-domain name of a website.

The team's official website states that any ENS domain name owner can create and manage an unlimited number of sub-usernames, named in a personalized way and ending with "base.eth".

Will be sold via Dutch auction mechanism

Base then introduced the sale method, saying that all Basenames will be sold through a Dutch auction (Reverse auction) to ensure that all users have a fair chance to obtain the name they want:

The price will gradually decrease within 36 hours, starting at 100 ETH and subject to a premium fee, and will drop to 0.39 ETH within 12 hours; after the auction ends, the premium fee will no longer be charged.

As for the exact release date and time, Base creator Jesse Pollak only revealed that Basenames will be launched on Tuesday:

We're going to make Basenames the easiest way to build or live on-chain and you're going to want one.

Base Name Service (BNS): The service will be gradually retired

At the same time, Base Name Service (BNS), the identity aggregation protocol provided by Orange DAO that has been running on Base for a long time, tweeted that Basenames will serve as the next chapter of identities on the Base chain:

With the upcoming launch of Basenames, BNS will be gradually retired to ensure that all Base users have a unified name service and on-chain identity experience.
