Scammers are targeting Phantom wallet users on Solana, attempting to steal private keys through fake pop-up windows that mimic legitimate update requests. The attackers aim to trick users into entering their seed phrase, granting them full access to the victim’s wallet.
Fake Update Requests as a Phishing Tactic
The Web3 scam detection platform, Scam Sniffer, issued a warning on February 6 via X (formerly Twitter), alerting users that scammers are connecting to genuine Phantom wallets and attempting to deceive users with a fake "extension update" signature request.
📌 How the Scam Works:
A fake pop-up appears, prompting users to sign an update request. If the user approves, a second prompt asks for their seed phrase.Once the seed phrase is entered, scammers gain full access to the wallet and can drain funds immediately.
How to Identify Fake Pop-Ups?
In late January, Scam Sniffer also warned that malicious websites imitate the Phantom interface, attempting to steal seed phrases through deceptive connection requests.
🔍 Ways to Protect Yourself:
Right-click the link – Phishing sites often disable right-click, whereas legitimate Phantom pop-ups allow it.Check the URL – Genuine Phantom pop-ups contain "chrome-extension" in the link, something scam websites cannot replicate.Verify window behavior – Real Phantom pop-ups can be minimized, maximized, and resized, whereas fake ones remain locked within the browser tab.
Phantom Wallet Usage on the Rise
Despite ongoing phishing attacks, Phantom remains one of the most widely used crypto wallets, largely driven by the growing popularity of Solana-based memecoins.

Additionally, rumors circulated that Phantom planned to launch an airdrop token as part of its upcoming social discovery feature. However, the company denied these claims, stating that no airdrop is planned at this time.
📢 Final Warning: Stay Vigilant!
Phishing attacks on Phantom wallet users are increasing, with scammers constantly evolving their tactics. Always verify URLs, avoid clicking suspicious links, and never enter your seed phrase on any unverified platform! 🚨
