@Dusk Founded in 2018, Dusk did not emerge from the same impulses that shaped much of early decentralized finance. While many layer 1 networks were built to optimize throughput, composability, or speculative velocity, Dusk began with a quieter question: why does so little on-chain financial activity resemble real financial markets as they actually function?

DeFi, for all its innovation, has largely been structured around openness by default. Every balance, every trade, every position is public. This radical transparency has benefits, but it also introduces structural distortions that are rarely acknowledged. Capital becomes reflexive. Strategies are copied instantly. Positions are front-run not through technical exploits, but through visibility itself. Risk is no longer priced privately; it is broadcast.

In traditional finance, privacy is not an ethical abstraction. It is a functional requirement. Institutions operate through selective disclosure, not secrecy for its own sake, but because market stability depends on it. A fund cannot rebalance, a bank cannot manage liquidity, and a corporation cannot issue debt if every move triggers immediate market reaction. DeFi’s transparency collapses these boundaries, creating environments where rational behavior is often punished.

Dusk exists in response to this tension. This reduces governance pressure and avoids the common DeFi pattern where incentives favor short-term experimentation over long-term reliability.

Importantly, Dusk does not position itself as a replacement for permissionless finance. It operates alongside it, acknowledging that different forms of capital have different needs. Open systems excel at innovation and discovery. Regulated systems excel at durability and scale. The mistake has been assuming one must subsume the other.
