Who is Changpeng Zhao?
Changpeng Zhao, the CEO of Binance, was born on September 10, 1977 in the Jiangsu province of China. In the late 1980s, at the age of 12, he moved to Canada with his family and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. His parents were teachers in China. His father had been working as a university lecturer before he was branded a ”pro-bourgeois wit" and exiled to rural areas shortly after Zhao's birth. During his teenage years, Zhao supported his family by working in a number of service jobs, including McDonald's.
Zhao majored in computer science at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
After graduating from university, Zhao took an internship in Tokyo, working at a subcontractor of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, developing software for matching commercial orders. Later, he worked full-time for four years at Bloomberg Tradebook, where he was a futures software developer.

Starting in September 2015, Zhao founded a stock exchange development company BIJIETECH, which provides cloud-based trading technology to a number of Asian stock exchanges. Zhao left BIJIETECH when he founded Binance in July 2017 and filled Binance's senior ranks with senior developers and engineers from BIJIETECH. He also briefly served as OKCoin's CTO before BIJIETECH, which gained him experience in senior technical roles.
In July 2017, Binance managed to raise $15 million at the ICO event it set up, and the exchange began trading eleven days later. In less than eight months, Zhao has transformed Binance into one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume, as of April 2018.
