Binance Converts All SAFU Assets to USDC: Details
Binance, the world's leading exchange by trading volume, has announced the conversion of its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) fund into Circle's USDC stablecoin.
In an announcement, Binance praised Circle's USDT as an "audited" and "trusted" stablecoin.
The emergency fund was launched by Binance back in July in order to safeguard the exchange's users. Binance allocated a portion of trading fees to the fund.
Prior to the conversion, the fund's wallets included Binance's native BNB token, Bitcoin (BTC), Tether's USDT stablecoin, and the TrueUSD (TUSD) stablecoin. The size of the fund was typically set at $1 billion, but its value would routinely fluctuate since it included a basket of different cryptocurrencies.

For instance, when the cryptocurrency market experienced extreme volatility in November 2022 amid the FTX crisis, Binance rushed to top it up in order to protect users.
The conversion into USDC will ensure the stability of the SAFU fund even during market fluctuations since the USDC stablecoin is pegged to the US dollar. Moreover, it is often touted as a safer alternative to Tether's USDT due to its strong emphasis on regulatory compliance. Chris Holland, partner at compliance firm HM, told Bloomberg that the conversion gives "certainty" to the value of the fund.
According to CoinGecko data, USDC is the sixth-largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $32.4 billion. Binance's BNB token has a market cap of $83.9 billion, which puts it in fourth place.
In March 2023, Binance also swapped out the holdings in its BUSD stablecoin after the minting of the token was halted by Paxos due to regulatory concerns.

'Cannot Be Currencies': FM Nirmala Sitharaman Spells India’s Stance on Crypto
Sitharaman was speaking at the India Today Conclave 2024 on Friday when she was asked if the recent bull run in the crypto sector had nudged to government to think about the position of cryptocurrencies in India's financial space.
In response to the question, Sitharaman reportedly said, “Its (the government's) position has always been this, that assets created in the name of crypto can be assets for trading, assets for money making and assets for many other things. We haven't regulated them then, and we haven't regulated them now. But they cannot be currencies and that's the Government of India's position.”
Sitharaman's statement comes when the crypto sector is on an upward trajectory. Owing to a massive inflow of capital into BTC through US-approved ETFs, Bitcoin price surged to an all-time high of over $73,700 (roughly Rs. 61 lakh) this week. Most popular cryptocurrencies tailed behind BTC on the surge trail, taking the crypto market capitalisation to over $2.7 trillion (roughly Rs. 2,23,78,585 crore).
In fact, earlier this week, the chief of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) cited some of these crypto features while addressing concerns around a potential investor exodus from the traditional markets space towards options like crypto.
The Indian finance minister, however, maintained an unfazed approach towards the developments currently shaping the crypto industry. She also explained the government's reason of drafting a crypto roadmap for the G20 nations under its presidency last year.“Currencies are to be issued with a fiat of the government or the central bank of the day. And it is still unregulated in India. If one country regulates it and others don't, it will be an easy way of moving money, round-tripping, funding drugs or even terrorism.

NFPrompt Suffers Hack, FBI Investigates and Funds Frozen
According to Foresight News, NFPrompt has disclosed an attack on its X platform, with hackers infiltrating some wallets, including the NFP contract manager's wallet, and illegally controlling some NFP treasury and ecosystem funds. The team has stated:
1. They have transferred all ownership of NFP's smart contracts to a new address, effectively cutting off the attack vector. Users' NFP and assets on the platform are safe;
2. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has intervened in the investigation, and officials have called for major CEXs to freeze any funds related to the hackers. Before further notice on this incident, please do not accept NFP from untrusted sources, as NFP tokens related to the hackers will be marked and confiscated;
3. The team has requested its partner CEX to suspend deposits during the investigation. Similarly, they urge DEX to temporarily stop all liquidity pool activities involving NFP tokens as a precautionary measure;
4. Additionally, the team is collaborating with Web3 security company SlowMist and Chainalysis to monitor the hackers' on-chain activities.
