According to PANews, a recent survey released on April 9 by Policy Genius reveals that over one-fifth of young Americans own crypto assets, with the younger generation investing in crypto assets four times more frequently than the older generation.
Compared to traditional investments, Generation Z, aged between 18 and 26, showed the highest preference for crypto assets. 20% of Gen Z respondents reported owning crypto assets, while 18% owned stocks, 13% owned real estate, and 11% owned bonds.
Millennials, aged between 27 and 42, invested in crypto assets slightly more frequently than Gen Z respondents, with 22% owning crypto assets. However, the rate of crypto asset ownership among millennials did not surpass traditional investments. 27% invested in stocks, and 24% invested in real estate. Bonds were less popular in this age group, with only 16% investing in them.
The survey also found that 9% of Gen Z respondents owned NFTs, compared to 8% of millennials. Although in absolute terms, each generation showed some interest in crypto assets, the investment rate of Gen Z became very significant compared to the older generation.
Policy Genius found that the overall ownership rate of crypto assets was significantly lower among the two oldest generations. Among Generation X, born between the mid-1960s and late 1970s, 10% of respondents owned crypto assets, and 4% owned NFTs. Meanwhile, only 5% of the Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, owned crypto assets, and 1% owned NFTs.
The generation gap also related to real estate investments. When considering the investment rates of Gen Z and millennials together, 21% of respondents owned crypto assets, while 20% owned real estate. However, despite the very close investment rates within the age group, older investors had a much higher real estate investment rate, such as 45% of Baby Boomer investors choosing real estate.
The report suggests that housing shortages and high housing costs may hinder young people from investing in real estate, increasing the appeal of alternative investments like crypto assets.
