Whether abroad or at home, the scam routine is the same!

In White Rock, Texas, according to police, an elderly woman in North Texas was prevented from losing thousands of dollars in a Bitcoin scam because of the quick thinking of a sharp-eyed female citizen.

Police in White Settlement received a call from a kind passerby who said that she saw an elderly woman deposit a large amount of money at a Bitcoin ATM at a convenience store in the 2000 block of South Cherry Lane.

Hearing the woman on the phone, the caller suspected that she had been scammed.

When the police arrived and found the elderly woman, she told the police that she thought she was in trouble with Chase Bank and was just following their instructions.

White Settlement police said in a press release that the investigation showed that the scammer arranged a ride-sharing service to take the woman from her home to a local Chase Bank branch, where she withdrew $40,000, and then to a convenience store with a Bitcoin ATM.

Unfortunately, she had already deposited $23,900 into the machine. The police department is currently working with Bitcoin Law Enforcement Liaisons and the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office to recover her money.

The entire process was captured on dashcam video, body-worn camera footage and audio from the 911 call.

Police say the scammer threatened the woman that she would be arrested if she did not withdraw $40,000. A common method of perpetrating this scam is to spoof an institution's caller ID to display a name like Chase Bank.

Responding officer Sgt. James Stewart said he was frustrated that the elderly had been caught by the scammers, but was also relieved to see that the victim was safe.

"All I can do is think about my mom in this case," Sgt. Stewart said in the news release. "I hope we can find this scammer and put him in jail for a long time because he may still be doing this to other people."

In a touching moment, the victim hugged both officers, expressing relief and gratitude for their intervention.
