X users who subscribe to the "Blue" service can now choose to hide their verification badges, Cointelegraph reported. According to a recently updated Twitter help article, X owner Elon Musk previously warned that he was not afraid to "screw things up" as he and newly appointed X CEO Linda Yaccarino continue to tweak the subscription service's features. Musk's first move after acquiring X (then Twitter) was to reconfigure the long-standing verification system. Before Musk made the changes, the service issued verification badges to account holders deemed worthy of attention, or those whose identities could be easily impersonated. These people included celebrities, politicians, and journalists. Twitter wiped out the previous records after Musk implemented the new subscription-based system. Under the current X "Blue" subscription service, users will receive verification badges after paying the service fee and attaching a phone number to their account. Now, X is offering subscribers the option to opt out of displaying the subscription badge. It's unclear why the company is offering this choice, but the accompanying Twitter help page does warn subscribers that the switch is not definitive: "Verification badges may still appear in some places, and some features may still show that you have an active subscription."
