The technology market is seeing higher demand than ever from business users using OpenAI's ChatGPT.

The Number of Business Users Using ChatGPT Explodes

OpenAI CEO Brad Lightcap shared with Bloomberg on April 4. He said the company recently received applications for 600,000 ChatGPT Enterprise accounts.

Lightcap describes this growth as “strong momentum.” The CEO calls 2024 “the year of AI adoption in the enterprise.”

OpenAI has seen a 4x growth in enterprise users from 150,000 in January. This growth comes less than a year after ChatGPT Enterprise was launched in August 2023.

ChatGPT Enterprise offers many features. It allows users to exclude business data from OpenAI's training. This is a feature also found in some versions of competing products such as Microsoft Copilot.

Data Protection vs Content Licensing

AI companies provide business customers with information security features. This further heightens widespread concerns about data access amid allegations of content access violations.

ChatGPT's business model also demonstrates that data privacy can exist alongside data access. Lightcap commented on its efforts to secure licensing agreements between OpenAI and media companies. This allows the company to use external data for training and in-app content.

OpenAI already has several licensing agreements of this type in the works. Recent articles have covered recent licensing agreements between OpenAI and media companies in France, Spain and Germany. A separate Reuters report from January said that the company was in discussions with US companies including CNN, Fox and Time. Lightcap said that he “expects much more activity” from OpenAI in the future.

Lightcap calls an ongoing lawsuit from the New York Times “unfounded.” This assertion also reflects OpenAI's stance. It is known that the lawsuit accuses OpenAI of copyright infringement by training AI on New York Times articles.
