What is RWA - Real World Asset?

Real World Asset (RWA) are real-life assets such as real estate, vehicles, precious metals, etc. that are encoded on-chain as tokens or NFTs to be used in DeFi. This brings the DeFi industry and the cryptocurrency market in general the following benefits:

- Helps increase liquidity and TVL of DeFi: The value of global real estate was 326.5 trillion USD in 2020 while the gold market capitalization was 12.39 trillion USD. Therefore, even if only a small portion of it is tokenized, DeFi's TVL will grow strongly.

- Opens up a new industry for the cryptocurrency market. DeFi users will have many new asset types to invest in.

- Allows cross-border asset transfers without restrictions thanks to blockchain and DeFi technology.

The BlackRock CEO said spot ETF products are an important stepping stone in the company's RWA strategy.

BlackRock said it will authorize Securitize as the transfer agent and tokenization platform, along with the fund's asset custodian, BNY Mellon.

BlackRock also made a strategic investment in Securitize but terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In the crypto market, creating tokens on the blockchain for traditional investments such as bonds and funds is called real-world tokenized assets (RWA). This is a rapidly growing blockchain application thanks to the close combination between digital assets and traditional finance (TradFi).
