Telegram is preparing for IPO in 2024

Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov gave his first interview since 2017 to talk about the future of the messaging service and especially its financial future. He said an initial public offering (IPO) is being considered.

Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai founded Telegram in 2013. Pavel Durov is currently the sole owner of the company, according to the Financial Times. He told the newspaper on March 11:

“We hope to be profitable next year, if not this year.”

Durov said the company has "started making money" and that Telegram sees value in an IPO as a means to democratize access to Telegram's value. This happened despite offers from investors at “a valuation of more than $30 billion.” The newspaper wrote that two anonymous sources told it that Telegram would likely seek to list in the United States once the company becomes profitable.

Telegram has raised $2 billion through bond issuance since 2021. Bondholders will get a 10-20% discount on the Telegram IPO if it floats before March 2026. Durov also told the newspaper that Telegram would consider following Reddit's lead by offering "loyal users" to also share in the IPO.
