Previously, the blockchain non-profit organization Dfinity Foundation sued Meta for trademark infringement. However, according to a document from the San Francisco Federal Court, the latest news on February 8 showed that Meta and Dfinity resolved the dispute through settlement. Both parties asked the court to dismiss the case on the grounds of prejudice, which means that the case cannot be reopened.
A Meta spokesperson said Meta was satisfied with the outcome, adding that it pointed out flaws in the amended lawsuit, which ultimately led to Dfinity dropping the suit. A Dfinity representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
The Internet Computer is a decentralized public network with unlimited capacity, owned by Dfinity. Last May, Dfinity sued Meta, arguing that the logo Meta adopted after changing its name from Facebook was easily confused with the logo used by Dfinity. Meta explained that its "continuous loop" logo was a bit like the letter M, and the infinite logo also symbolized the broad prospects of the metaverse.

A U.S. district judge dismissed Dfinity's initial lawsuit, but allowed Dfinity to amend the complaint. The judge believed that Meta's logo would not cause confusion among consumers, the two designs were different, and Dfinity's customers tended to be more tech-savvy developers. In December last year, Dfinity amended the complaint and re-filed the lawsuit.
Meta currently has some trademark lawsuits to resolve, such as the lawsuits filed by VR company MetaX and investment company Metacapital. These lawsuits were all triggered by Meta's name change.
