According to BlockBeats, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed his opposition to making political voting decisions based solely on a candidate's stance on cryptocurrency. In a statement on July 18, Buterin emphasized that support for a politician should be based on their overall platform and viewpoints, rather than just their support for cryptocurrencies.
Buterin noted that the cryptocurrency sector is becoming increasingly active in politics, often supporting parties and candidates based on their willingness to be lenient and friendly towards cryptocurrencies. However, he warned that making decisions in this manner could contradict the values that initially attracted individuals to the crypto space. In the crypto community, there is a tendency to overly focus on the central role of money and the freedom to hold and spend money (or tokens). Bitcoin, for instance, is seen as an extension of libertarian ideals in the realm of internet payments.
Buterin argued that while freedom is crucial and decentralized networks are adept at protecting it, money is just one of several important areas where these networks can be applied. He also pointed out that a politician's current friendliness towards cryptocurrencies does not guarantee that they will maintain this stance in the future.
