Marathon Digital is expanding its geographic footprint into Europe, marking an important step in its global diversification strategy, Blockworks reported. This is in contrast to some of its North American competitors, which are more focused on domestic projects. After launching a two-megawatt data center in the Satakunta region of Finland, Marathon hopes to help heat the area's 11,000 people. The process Marathon is testing is called district heating, which involves heating water in a central location and then distributing it through underground pipes. Marathon said such systems are designed to reduce carbon emissions from heating, especially in urban areas. Marathon said in a press release on Thursday that it will look for more innovative ways to use its data centers to promote sustainability. Another part of Marathon's strategy is geographic diversity. This is a way to reduce costs, Marathon executives said before and after the recent Bitcoin halving. Marathon's North American operations include sites in Texas, Nebraska and North Dakota. Last year, the company expanded into the United Arab Emirates through a joint venture with FS Innovations.
