According to Blockworks, the timing of Ethereum's next major upgrade is unclear, and it is expected to be between November this year and early 2025, although the latter now looks more likely. The first thing that needs to be determined is the specifications of all Ethereum Improvement Proposals for the "Pectra" upgrade. Although most of the work has been completed, EIP-7702: Set EOA account code for a transaction was identified as the first unresolved specification issue for "Pectra" during the All Core Developers (ACD) call on Thursday. This proposal allows an externally owned account (EOA) - such as a common wallet like MetaMask - to temporarily act as a smart contract in a transaction. EIP-7702 aims to merge some of the functions of the two to enhance flexibility and security. For example, transactions without paying gas fees, where a dapp sets an EOA to allow third parties (such as operators or sponsors) to pay fees for transactions. EIP-7702 was proposed by Ethereum developers including Vitalik Buterin in early May and is expected to replace earlier attempts at similar functions that sparked controversy.
