According to CoinDesk, last week, Argentina advanced the implementation of a virtual asset service provider (VASP) registration system, triggering protests from some people who originally hoped that Argentina would welcome Bitcoin like El Salvador. The new regulations mean that platforms and individuals who buy, sell, send or trade cryptocurrencies must comply with a registration process. Although this regulation appears to be a holdover from the previous administration, it was advanced and became law under President Javier Milais, disappointing those who had thought that Latin America would be getting another Bitcoin-friendly leader . The new regulations appeared to have an immediate impact, with users of payments app Strike reporting that the platform informed them that global sending between Argentina and the United States would no longer be supported. CoinDesk has reached out to Strike for comment. Since taking office in December 2023, Milley has been reducing the size and scope of government, and this year Argentina achieved its first monthly budget surplus since 2011. However, not everyone sees the new VASP regulations as a negative. "This (new regulation) is one of the things that needs to be implemented if Argentina wants to get more foreign investment," one Argentinian resident said.
