The unconscious is a blind impulse. It is an innate habit, thus possessing great power. Our inner greed, violence, anger, jealousy, and so on all belong to the unconscious. These tendencies are condemned by civilized society, so we suppress this unconsciousness in the dark, yet they still strive to break free.

The power of our actions often comes from the unconscious rather than from conscious decisions. This is exactly the opposite of what we usually think. When our inner consciousness and unconsciousness come into conflict, it is often the unconscious that prevails in the end. Consciousness can make a decision, but there is no supporting power behind that decision.
