At the beginning of August 2022, Tornado Cash was sanctioned by the US government for allegedly aiding hackers in laundering over $7 billion from 2019 to 2022. This incident led to many consequences, such as dY-dX locking related wallets, and all GitHub accounts related to Tornado Cash being deleted.
But the bigger issue is that Circle froze $75,000 in wallets believed to be related to Tornado Cash. This raises concerns about Circle's concentration of power as it can freeze USD-C at any time without needing to go through anyone.
Subsequently, MakerDAO - one of the major holders of USD-C - considered removing USD-C from the PSM - DAI's price balancing module. And of course, MakerDAO may not be the only one wanting to do this after the Tornado Cash incident.
Therefore, if Circle is showing the community its concentration of power with USD-C, it is highly likely to be a significant 'backlash' against them.
