Devconnect 2023 was held in Istanbul from November 13 to 19. The event was hosted by ETHGlobal for a week, aiming to discuss hot topics in Ethereum in depth, bring together popular projects in the Ethereum ecosystem, and gather many Ethereum ecosystem participants and developers to share the latest developments of ecological projects. Many KOLs flew to Istanbul to attend the conference, including Vitalik Buterin. Let's see what they saw and felt during the conference.

Venue Information

On November 14, Vitalik Buterin gave a speech titled "Exit games for EVM validiums: the return of Plasma" at L2DAYS in Istanbul, and later updated the blog post of the same name.

In August 2017, Vitalik Buterin and Joseph Poon published the article "Plasma: Autonomous Smart Contracts", announcing that Plasma would be the new expansion solution for Ethereum. However, the technology has not made any progress since then, and Plasma is very complicated in terms of fund withdrawal and other issues, making it difficult for it to become a truly viable scalability solution. However, Plasma's failure is not useless. The birth of zk-Rollup has shown people the possible direction of layer-2 expansion, which can solve Plasma's data availability and exit complexity problems.

As the L2 landscape becomes more and more centralized, Vitalik has proposed the Plasma solution and combined it with zk-SNARK proof to explore more possibilities for Ethereum expansion. Crypto researcher Haotian wrote an article interpreting Vitalik's new article from the aspects of Plasma application scenarios, ZK+Plasma, etc.

Read the article: "Vitalik's new article: Plasma returns - EVM validiums exit the game", "Vitalik's new article throws out a new direction of "ZK+Plasma", will the L2 landscape change again? "

What we saw at the conference

1. Devcon’s advertisements were displayed at Istanbul Airport, with large advertisements in mainstream media. Compared with Singapore, which only had impressive headshots of Sun Ge at the 2049 main venue and high-end OKX F1 advertisements everywhere, Turkey seems to have better media and public coverage. 2. At the same time, StarkNet appeared at the Devconnect conference, and the Zohal team informed the attendees of the recent progress and discussed the future of DeFi on #Starknet. (@StarkNet_ZH)

3. Kakarot Ecosystem Director shares details of future roadmap. (@StarkNet_ZH)

4. @NethermindStark members demonstrated the Starknet infrastructure using STARK technology, including Juno full node, block browser, Starknet RPC, Go language Cairo VM, Starknet Unity SDK and other topics. (@StarkNet_ZH)

5. @FibrousFinance members introduce the development of cryptocurrency in Türkiye. (@StarkNet_ZH)

6. Crypto KOL @0xAA_Science also went to Turkey. He said on Twitter that zkSync has made efforts on L3.

7. If you don’t really invest your time and energy, you will miss out on many Alphas. When I arrived at Istanbul Airport last week, I was shocked by the overwhelming advertisements for $AVAX. Later, the local KOL told me that $AVAX has a huge community in Turkey. Devconnect is mainly for developers of the Eight Banners in the Ethereum ecosystem. Developers are generally very rich and lack financial knowledge. They only use some very simple logic to make investment decisions. (@0xjuu_17)
