On December 12, 2024, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Entrepreneurs Club, Professor Zhang Xueji, an academician of the European Academy of Sciences, an academician of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, vice-chairman and chair professor of the Shenzhen University Council, and co-chair of the academic and technical committee of the Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence Thirty-Person Forum, delivered a keynote speech—(From AI, Web3.0 to Meta, the Practice Theory of Achieving Immortality). With his unique perspective as a scholar, he deeply explored how artificial intelligence realizes the leap to immortality practice.
The following is the original speech (slightly modified):
Good afternoon, distinguished guests!
I am an educator and researcher, and I have worked in hospitals, so I often jokingly say that in front of professors I am the president, and in front of presidents, I am a professor. If I encounter someone who is both a professor and a president, I refer to myself as the editor-in-chief, as I serve as the editor-in-chief and deputy editor-in-chief of several magazines.
Our team is called BEST, dedicated to achieving a perfect integration of production, education, and research, promoting the collaborative development of education, scientific research, and industry incubation. Our goal is to not only achieve our career aspirations but also create economic value, to pursue excellent research while transforming results into practical applications that benefit human society.
In terms of the transformation of scientific research results, I have gained a profound understanding over more than 20 years of practice that the journey from research to commercialization involves three stages: first, realizing ideas in the laboratory and publishing academic papers; second, transforming the paper results into products; and finally, turning the products into profitable commodities. Only by completing these three stages can the transformation of scientific research results be considered truly complete.
Our laboratory is not only a center for talent cultivation and technological innovation but also a base for the transformation of results. Although Shenzhen is not large, we have proposed the concept of smart sensing and plan to create a smart sensing industrial cluster.
In the field of biosensors, I firmly believe that to master sensing is to hold the key to the world. Because our current lives are already inseparable from sensors, with hundreds of sensors installed in smartphones. Mastering biological sensing is equivalent to mastering the code of life. Biosensors are an emerging and comprehensive discipline that integrates knowledge from multiple fields such as chemistry, biology, mechanics, and electronic information, and they have wide applications involving national security, aerospace, health management, video monitoring, environmental monitoring, and more.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese scientists developed detection methods and reagents for the coronavirus within just two weeks, making a significant contribution to the global fight against the epidemic. This also proves the important role of biosensors in responding to sudden public health emergencies.
By combining artificial intelligence and 5G technology, we have proposed a new concept of intelligent biosensing. The development of artificial intelligence has reached a new height, with applications of large models like ChatGPT and Sora. We are integrating 5G, artificial intelligence, and biosensors to develop intelligent biosensing systems. This system includes not only the infrastructure layer, intermediary layer, and application layer but also involves natural interaction and intelligent learning, empowering new industries.
In the future, smart sensors will evolve from wearable to implantable forms, solving the issue of stickiness, achieving blood sugar control, brain control, and even improving diseases. Our smart sensing technology was applied at the Beijing Olympics, providing smart monitoring and control for officials, athletes, and referees, receiving a letter of thanks from the Olympic Committee and coverage from CCTV.
We have also developed smart sensing patches to solve the data and sensory issues between the virtual and the real. Digital immortality is our goal, which includes physical health, mental health, and intelligent health. By combining carbon-based and silicon-based technologies, we hope to achieve infinite life, even without food, relying only on electricity or sunlight.
The combination of silicon-based and carbon-based technologies will allow us to achieve infinite life, from digital twins and digital natives to digital immortality. We have made progress in experiments communicating in dreams, marking that we are on the eve of technological development.
Our goal is to focus on the human internet of things, continuously collecting key real-time data from the human body to lay the foundation for building digital life. We have developed smart media, and thus we firmly believe that health and wealth go hand in hand. By integrating the data layer, infrastructure layer, and user layer, we are building a smart sensing system. Our scientists are extraordinary and exceptional; they can not only transform the world but also create a new one.
First, there is the real world, the people and things we see with our own eyes.
Secondly, there is the realm of the mind, where our thoughts and plans constitute the universe of the mind.
Finally, there is the digital universe (metaverse). Today, with the help of our technology, we have created a third world—the virtual digital universe, also known as the metaverse. By collecting human data through smart sensing technology, we aim to build digital life based on that data. In fact, humanity is destined to march toward the metaverse. The metaverse compels us to reevaluate grand philosophical and scientific issues such as existence and nothingness, the physical and the spiritual, and the faith in goodness versus faith in evil.
We are in a turbulent period where technological changes and scientific advancements are driving social development. The Fourth Industrial Revolution will be jointly driven by artificial intelligence, new energy, and life sciences. By fully integrating blockchain, AR, VR, 5G, 6G, big data, and artificial intelligence, we will create digital creation, digital assets, digital markets, digital currencies, digital consumption, and even digital humanity.
Digital humans are a wonderful project that will change the world and the future. Our goal is to create a digital life through smart sensing, allowing the deaf to hear, the blind to see, the mute to speak, and the paralyzed to stand up and run, even faster than humans. Our long-term goal is to solve the problem of human immortality within 30 years. Although this is a huge challenge, I believe that as long as we strive each year to achieve a small goal, we can keep moving forward.
Thank you all!
