Brasil, Mercado Bitcoin

The scenario seems favorable for the adoption of crypto assets in Brazil, revealed a study by Mercado Bitcoin (MB). According to the exchange, the number of crypto users in the country could reach half of the population by 2030.

The conclusion is in the report “State of Digital Assets in Brazil”, which contains research compiled by Mercado Bitcoin. The study was presented at the Digital Assets Conference Brazil, an event that took place in São Paulo and was attended by the main names in the sector.

DREX to boost crypto adoption in Brazil

Mercado Bitcoin works with the expectation that the global crypto market could reach US$ 1 trillion by 2025. In addition, it cites the favorable scenario for the use of new financial technologies in Brazil.

The country is responsible for two important tools – Pix and DREX – which makes it a possible global reference in the speed of adoption of digital assets.

Mercado Bitcoin cites a study by Sherlock Communications, which indicates that 24% of the Brazilian population already owns some type of crypto asset or digital token — a number that was 14% in 2023.

Therefore, MB's research team believes that the number of users and investors could reach “even half of the Brazilian population, which would represent almost 120 million Brazilians” in 2030. The exchange then points to DREX as the main driver of this transition.

MB also cites the Global Crypto Adoption Index 2024, a similar survey by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. The most recent edition of the report indicates that Brazil is the 10th country with the highest cryptocurrency adoption in the world.

“We are experiencing a significant change in the way Brazilians deal with money and make investments. This accelerated growth is a response to the search for more flexible and accessible financial alternatives, especially among younger people,” said Mercado Bitcoin CEO Reinaldo Rabelo.

Country stands out in asset tokenization

Mercado Bitcoin also believes that Brazil can benefit from the growth of the asset tokenization market. The estimate is that this industry will move around US$800 trillion “in the long term”.

By 2025, for example, this figure could reach US$1 trillion. Sectors such as real estate, sports and agribusiness are driving this adoption.

“Tokenization opens a new chapter in the democratization of investments. Now, anyone can access fractions of assets that were previously restricted to large investors,” adds Rabelo.

As highlights of tokenization, he cites, for example, Private Credit initiatives (US$ 9.06 billion), the tokenization of American debt securities (US$ 2.26 billion) and stablecoins (US$ 172 billion).

Another factor that could boost Brazil’s performance in the sector is the country’s regulatory environment. Mercado Bitcoin believes that it is “essential for the consolidation of the cryptoasset market.”
