Google’s newest Large Language Model (LLM) is now available to select companies.

According to The Information on September 15, Google has granted partial access to its upcoming conversational artificial intelligence product.

The report suggests that Google has granted access to a product called Gemini to a limited number of companies, but it has not yet been released more widely. Gemini features a series of large language models (LLMs) that are able to power chatbots, generate and summarize text, and generate code and images.

While Google initially planned to offer a limited version of Gemini, subsequent versions are designed to compete with and operate at the scale of OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Google is expected to make Gemini available through Google Cloud Vertex AI, an online portal that provides developers with access to AI models and other tools.

While Microsoft contributed to OpenAI, Google has increased its investments in generative AI elsewhere. The company made investments in two other competing AI companies, Anthropic AI and Runway, in the first half of 2023.

Google has not officially announced the expanded availability of Gemini. Instead, The Information cited people familiar with the matter as its sources.

Nonetheless, Google has confirmed the product’s existence. Google initially announced Gemini in May 2023. While Google says the model is still being trained, it says it’s seeing “impressive multimodal capabilities” that it hasn’t seen before, meaning Gemini is very capable of handling different types of input.

Google is pursuing several AI goals

In late August, Google announced news related to several other AI pursuits through its cloud division, including its collaborative AI tool Duet and improved AI chips. These announcements also revealed AI partnerships with popular companies such as Estee Lauder, Fox Sports, GE Appliances, General Motors, and more.

Google also offers AI services for consumers through Bard, an AI chatbot that is primarily used to generate written content. The company's currently available AI model, PaLM 2, is the basis for Bard and certain other services.
