U.S. prosecutors have charged five members of the Scattered Spider gang with launching hacking attacks on dozens of companies and individuals, resulting in the theft of at least $11 million in cryptocurrency, Wu reported.
Federal prosecutors in California said the defendants obtained credentials from employees through fraudulent means such as text message phishing and SIM card swapping, gaining unauthorized access to accounts and company networks between late 2021 and spring 2023.
About $4 million of the stolen cryptocurrency has been recovered. Scattered Spider is a decentralized group that uses social engineering techniques to trick IT employees into accessing corporate networks, with some members located in the United States and the United Kingdom.
