Vitalik Buterin urged the community to prepare for a potential 51% attack on Ethereum
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin advocated improving the preparation of the network of the second largest cryptocurrency by capitalization for a hypothetical 51% attack, The Block reports.
“We want to make the response to 51% attacks as automated as possible. If you are a validator, then your node should run software that, if it detects censorship of transactions or validators, or if the node itself is being censored, will automatically counteract the censorship of the main chain. All honest nodes, through the code they run, will automatically be coordinated to use the same minority software,” he said.
Buterin admitted that it is impossible to achieve automatic transition of 100% of the network to a fork due to many restrictions. But he stressed
According to him, “the technology layer should at least present one obvious candidate for a soft fork” around which the community can unite if necessary to leave the censorship chain.
Among other things, Buterin advocated the development of second-layer solutions and the widespread adoption of light Ethereum clients. The corresponding wallets, he is convinced, should support verification in the context of zkEVM.
He also touched on the threat from quantum computers. In the context of the Ethereum blockchain, this remains an unresolved problem, Buterin emphasized. He also pointed out four elements at risk: Merkle trees, consensus signatures, blobs and user accounts. Each of them has its own solutions.
The Ethereum co-founder also noted the importance of further simplifying the protocol to make the process easier for users and developers.
