In Malaysia, illegal cryptocurrency mining operators stole $723 million worth of electricity from 2018 to 2023, the country's deputy minister of energy and water resources said. 🚫⚡️

Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir noted that these illegal operations are not only harming state-owned energy operator Tenaga Nasional Berhad, but also local residents.

“The theft of electricity by those involved in cryptocurrency mining occurs because they believe that this activity cannot be detected due to the lack of meters in their territory,” Nasir said.

In Malaysia, cryptocurrency mining is not illegal, but stealing electricity for mining is a crime.
