According to Protos, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Deputy Minister of Energy Transformation of Malaysia, revealed at an event that illegal cryptocurrency miners stole $722 million worth of electricity between 2018 and 2023 and disposed of 2,022 confiscated items, including Bitcoin mining equipment. Akmal Nasrullah said that these miners believed that their activities would not be discovered because there were no electricity meters, but energy companies had a variety of ways to detect abnormal energy consumption in the area. The Malaysian government has made it a priority to prevent crypto miners from stealing electricity while increasing the production of renewable energy.
