The Internet is a fundamental pillar of the modern information order, but about two billion people still do not have access to it. The founders of Helium Mobile created a decentralized blockchain infrastructure to support Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In 2019, the company released Helium Hotspots with digital asset payouts to expand Helium Mobile's cellular coverage. Hotspot is a wireless hotspot that allows users to connect phones, tablets, computers and other IoT devices to the internet. Helium Mobile's cellular service runs on a mixture of towers such as T-Mobile in the US, Telefonica in Mexico and Helium Hotspots, which are hosted by individuals. These hotspot operators receive MOBILE/NFT tokens (HNT) as payment, as do phone subscribers who sign up for Helium Mobile's location tracking service, which should theoretically help determine where new hotspots should go.
