Breaking: ETH bybit hacked for $1.4 billion worth of crypto
Bybit said it had a security issue in one of its ETH cold wallets
The hack witnessed ETH theft of 1.4 billion dollars by the assailant.
After crypto investigator ZachXBT initially observed a security issue, crypto exchange Bybit said that one of its ETH wallets had been hacked. So far, the unknown assailant has pilfers $1.4 billion worth of ETH from many wallets.
"The situation happened when our ETH multisig cold wallet transferred funds to our warm wallet. Sadly, this transaction was controlled by a clever exploit hiding the signature interface and showing the proper address while changing the underlying smart contract logic. Bybit said in Friday's X post: "The assailant was able to get control of the impacted ETH cold wallet and transfer its holdings to an unidentified address."
Crypto investigator ZachXBT initially observed the hack when he found that the assailant divided mETH and stETH across many wallets and swapped them for ETH.
