Currently, an official proposal is being voted on by the Arbitrum DAO to implement an Important Improvement Proposal (AIP) to transition Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova to the Bounded Liquidity Delay (BoLD) mechanism.
BoLD has been deployed on the Arbitrum testnet since April 2024. It is a dispute resolution protocol with interactive fraud proofs for optimal rollups, which can be used on Arbitrum chains to improve security.
If the AIP is approved in the current vote, BoLD will be deployed on both Arbitrum chains, One and Nova, in February 2025. At that time, both chains will replace the current permissioned validators with a permissionless system, allowing anyone to participate in the network security process.
The on-chain vote has received widespread support from the Arbitrum community at the time of writing.

The operational mechanism of BoLD in Arbitrum
BoLD is designed with the goal of enhancing security when executing withdrawal transactions from the Arbitrum chain to the Ethereum mainnet.
This mechanism will introduce a fixed timeframe for resolving disputes related to the state of the Arbitrum chain. This time-limited approach is designed to minimize risks from delay attacks, where malicious actors can prolong the dispute resolution process, disrupting the system.
This fixed time period currently corresponds to two challenge phases (approximately 13 days) plus an additional 2-day extension for the Arbitrum security council to intervene if necessary.
Another important point of BoLD is shifting the focus of disputes from individual validators to the L2 state validation process. This will be achieved by allowing anyone to participate in the validation process, thereby enhancing the transparency and security of the system.
This proposal has also been audited and thoroughly tested to ensure its effectiveness and reliability before official deployment.
*Delay attack is a type of attack in the field of security and blockchain, where the attacker deliberately causes delays or prolongs the time to confirm or process transactions or activities on the network. The purpose of this delay may be to disrupt or slow down the normal operation of the system, thereby affecting the performance, reliability, or security of the network.
