Gavin Wood and Charles Hoskinson are both co-founders of Ethereum. Gavin made important contributions to Ethereum’s technical architecture (including the design of the Solidity programming language), while Charles was responsible for Ethereum’s early financing and business development.
However, due to some disagreements within the Ethereum community, Hoskinson had disagreements with other founders such as Vitalik Buterin, which eventually led to his departure from the Ethereum project. After his departure, Hoskinson created Cardano, a blockchain platform with a clear goal to provide a more robust academic and theoretical foundation.
Gavin Wood also left in 2017 and designed Polkadot to provide an interoperable multi-chain ecosystem that aims to solve the "isolated chain" problem and enable multiple blockchains to collaborate effectively. Polkadot pays special attention to the scalability of the network, shared security, and flexibility of the governance mechanism.
Although the two founders have their own independent projects, they have also had conversations and discussions about the future of blockchain. The two have publicly exchanged their views on blockchain technology on some occasions, and they are both promoting the academicization and theorization of blockchain. In particular, on issues such as blockchain governance, smart contracts, and cross-chain interoperability, their thoughts have some common points, especially the recognition that the future of blockchain is not just about technological advancement, but also needs to match social and economic systems.
Despite their differences in blockchain implementation, Gavin and Charles have shown respect for each other’s work. Gavin has publicly stated that he admires Hoskinson’s academic approach and long-term vision, while Hoskinson has also expressed his recognition of Polkadot, especially its efforts for cross-chain interoperability!
