Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, predicted that Ethereum will surpass Solana in 2025. He argued that developments in Layer-2 solutions, scalability improvements, and the rise of AI projects will propel Ethereum's growth.

These advancements are helping Ethereum shed its outdated reputation for being slow and costly, positioning it as a more accessible and scalable blockchain, even in competition with platforms like Solana.

Ethereum's growing ecosystem of Layer-2 solutions is expected to play a major role in its success over the next few years. These technologies, including Base, Optimism, and Arbitrum, aim to address the scalability and transaction cost issues that have long hindered Ethereum’s adoption. 

Layer-2 networks are designed to handle transactions off-chain, reducing fees and increasing processing speed while maintaining the security and decentralization that Ethereum is known for.

According to Hougan, Ethereum’s focus on these Layer-2 solutions will improve its user experience, making it more competitive with Solana, a blockchain praised for its ease of use. 

As Ethereum enhances its scalability through these upgrades, the platform becomes more appealing for developers, especially those building complex decentralized applications (dApps) and blockchain-based services.

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) projects on Ethereum also signals the blockchain's growing importance in emerging technology sectors. Hougan pointed to AI-driven applications such as Clanker and Virtuals, thriving on Ethereum’s Base network. 

These projects show that Ethereum is capable of supporting high-traffic blockchain applications and becoming a preferred platform for innovation in AI. 

This growing ecosystem of AI applications reflects Ethereum’s adaptability, making it an increasingly attractive platform for developers seeking reliable infrastructure for their projects.

Despite the rise of competing blockchain platforms like Solana, Ethereum continues to maintain a strong institutional presence. Hougan emphasized that if Ethereum can retain this institutional credibility while improving user experience, it will thrive in 2025.
