The internet is awash with deepfakes, bots, and AIs pretending to be humans. Many projects are racing to find an effective solution. Studies show that 5% to 15% of accounts on X are bots, and Facebook bans hundreds of millions of fake users every quarter.

Blockchain-based projects are developing various methods to prove humanity. Holonym uses “human keys” derived from biometric data and personal information. Civic verifies identity with a simple video stream. Projects like Proof of Humanity and Worldcoin offer similar verification systems.

These projects have been criticized for privacy concerns. Holonym tries to address these concerns by keeping the vast majority of data on the user’s device. The applications of digital identity systems are broad and can even be applied to political processes.
