This precious old photograph from 1910 clearly preserves the image of the 30-year-old Kong Xiangxi in Qing Dynasty official attire. He did not follow the traditional path of the imperial examination and officialdom, but was awarded the title of Jinshi by the Qing Dynasty to retain talents returning to the country, due to his graduation from Yale, allowing him to wear the ceremonial robes. His identity as the 75th descendant of Confucius is particularly unique. In this photo, he stands tall and composed. This official attire highlights the special treatment and exceptional status he received upon returning from his studies abroad, and silently tells the story of the unique circumstances and talent strategies of that era. As the husband of Song Ailing, Kong Xiangxi played a complex and multifaceted role in the history of the Republic of China. This photo undoubtedly provides a rare and direct historical testimony for future generations to explore Kong Xiangxi in depth and gain insight into the social and talent landscape of that time.
